A 10-km stretch of motorway under renovation near Zurich is the scene of an unprecedented breakthrough in road construction: 90 percent of the four-lane A51 roadway’s base layer contains recycled asphalt (RA). Typically, Swiss roads contain no more than 50-60 percent RA. Using substantially more RA reduces the amount of asphalt waste and the need to source costly and increasingly scarce raw materials from quarries.
To achieve this milestone, BHZ Baustoff Verwaltungs Ag, the Swiss asphalt-mix producer that led the A51 renovation, used Kratons biobased SYLVAROAD™ RP1000 Performance Additive.
